8th August 1894.

Sir,

I beg to report that I have carefully perused the

Accompanying papers, viz:- copy of despatch by His Excellency

the Governor of Hong Kong, No.204, dated 23rd October 1893,

Report by the Director of Public Works, dated 16th October, 1893

Minute by the Director of the Observatory, dated 20th October,

1893; also Report by the Director of Public Works dated 25th

October, 1893, all of which documents relate to the damage caus-

-ed to the Lantern and Dioptric Apparatus of Gap Rock Light

House during a typhoon on the 2nd October last.

As intimated in the letter of the Crown Agents for

the Colonies, the Director of Public Works, F.A.Cooper Esq has

called on me at this House, bringing with him detail drawings

of the Lighthouse, Dwellings, Stores, &c. together with Plan

and Sections of the Rock, all of which I beg to submit herewith

It is not possible to give a reliable opinion from these docu-

-ments as to the precise formation of the Rock above the level

of the sea. I, therefore, intimated to Mr Cooper, that I should

be glad to receive a survey of the Rock, with contour lines

shown thereon.

This he kindly obtained, together with the soundings

in the immediate vicinity; after which I had another interview

with him, when he left these documents with me (copies of which

I herewith submit). He also courteously furnished the necessary

information to enable me to prepare this Report.

Gap Rock is situated in a south-westerly direction

from Hong Kong, and is one of the most exposed Rocks in the

approaches thereto.
